  • Lunada Bay Tile introduces Vesuvio, a radiant new mixed media mosaic collection that combines glimmering glass tiles with natural marble. The ethereal stone and glass form simple geometric patterns that will become the timeless foundation for many interior styles. The collection will debut at Coverings, April 18-20 in Orlando, Florida, Booth #3600.

Graceful and versatile, Vesuvio flawlessly marries smooth, white marble with iridescent glass. The marble is elegant and delicate and creates an otherworldly beauty that can only be achieved after millions of years of nature working her magic. The glass is evocative of the semi-precious stone found in volcanic formations, with beautiful streams of color flowing within the glass.

The collection offers a profusion of possibilities for contemporary, transitional, and traditional spaces. Mixed finishes, colors and surface treatments are going to be the norm, predicts Lunada Bay Tile’s Design & Marketing Manager Feras Irikat. “People love the surprising mix of two materials in one application, and the natural and organic textures that add interest and design value. The more you mix, the more unique and personalized the space is.”

This glass and marble mixed-material mosaic creates an exquisite array of glistening surfaces and smooth textures throughout its design. Lunada Bay Tile’s glass is handcrafted by artisans who pour, shape, and blend molten glass to create sensual colors and finishes in a myriad of shapes. These mixed material mosaics, comprised of varying materials and finishes, are perfect for any design palette.

“We are excited to continue to push the boundaries with what tile can accomplish, aesthetically and functionally. This collection is the perfect complement to our extensive collections in glass, ceramic, and concrete,” adds Irikat. “It’s a well-rounded collection—with a balanced look and feel—and highlights everything that Lunada Bay Tile does best.”

The collection of mesh-mounted stone mosaics are available in six colors that work in solitude or in partnership with other glass, ceramic, concrete collections from Lunada Bay Tile. Four patterns, some random, some systematic, come in different scales—small, medium, and large – so a designer can be versatile in their designs. The collection includes:

    • Kindred combines hexagons to create a pattern that can go modern or traditional, with a random mix of stone and glass.
    • Panama Weave displays a traditional basketweave pattern.
    • Quilt interprets a traditional diamond quilt pattern.
    • Seesaw features a dynamic chevron pattern.

The use of tiles by designers has expanded dramatically into every room of the home. Tiles are not only defining kitchen backsplashes and adorning powder rooms, but also are used as dramatic fireplace surrounds, as accent walls in foyers and living rooms and on dining room ceilings – any place wallpaper or paint is used. “Tile surpasses two-dimensional confines and introduces texture and color into a room,” says Irikat.

  • Lunada Bay Tile is proud to introduce Shelter Island by Jonathan Adler, a ceramic tile collection inspired by the sun, the sand, the clouds, and the architecture of the designer’s Long Island, New York home. This new collection is exclusive to Lunada Bay Tile authorized dealers.

In this new collaboration, Adler’s imaginative expressions are brought to the art of ceramic tile. Think an abundance of craftsmanship, a dash of eclecticism, and a wink of mid-century magic—all reimagined through the lens of traditional hand-sculpted Japanese ceramics. The tiles are inspired by the colors and playful spirit of Adler's beachfront retreat. The quiet, semi-matte hues are harmonious with both minimalist and maximalist spaces. The semi-transparent glazes accentuate the tiles’ handcrafted textures and dimension to add subtle depth to a bath, spa or as an accent wall.

    The Chemistry of Collaboration
The collaboration between Lunada Bay Tile and Jonathan Adler is unique, a meticulous blend of Adler’s iconic aesthetic with Lunada Bay Tile’s expertise in tile design. The result: a design-forward, polished and modern option that brings elevated style to any space.

“We are thrilled to partner with such a trusted voice in world-class design, and we’re so pleased to introduce this new collection to our customers, partners and friends,” says Feras Irikat, Director of Design and Marketing, Lunada Bay Tile. “This exciting collection builds on our heritage of blending traditional craftsmanship with creative influences. While all our collections speak to leading industry trends, our commitment to our customers is to continually deliver a diverse possibility of design.”

Known for his glamorous interiors, Adler is a paradox—creating exuberant and eclectic interiors juxtaposed by a refined elegance.

“From the moment I first touched clay as a 12-year-old at summer camp, I felt a connection.  From that moment, it was ON:  I saw the world through clay,” says Adler. “My collection with Lunada Bay Tile – inspired by my home on Shelter Island in the Hamptons – combines modern design with the impeccable craftsmanship of traditional hand-sculpted Japanese ceramics.  I hope you like it as much as I do.”

Today, in addition to pottery, Adler designs furnishings, textiles, lighting, as well as home interiors,  hotels and retail establishments around the globe – and now tile. The new Shelter Island tile series offers a chic new look and adds modern American glamor to either residential or commercial interiors.

“Jonathan has been offering his unique take on décor since 1993, bringing his iconic style to everything from lighting to furniture, and now, for the first time, tile. We love Jonathan’s design aesthetic, his creativity, his insistence on using only the highest quality materials, and his amazing sense of humor,” adds Irikat.
Influenced by the Southern California lifestyle, and infused with a hint of Japanese sensibility, Lunada Bay Tile is known for its handcrafted glass, ceramic, and concrete tiles with an emphasis on simplicity, texture, and color. The designs are born from an impulse to transform spaces in ways that enrich the experience of people’s daily lives.

  • Harbor City, CA, April 18 –  From forward-looking tile collections to collaborations with design powerhouses such as designer and potter Jonathan Adler™ and lifestyle icon Tommy Bahama™, Lunada Bay Tile is featuring an array of shapes, patterns, colors, and materials at Coverings 2023, Booth #3600.
Lunada Bay Tile is introducing the new Vesuvio collection and is refreshing many of its most popular collections with new colors and patterns, including Shinju and Graphite.
    Lunada Bay Tile highlights include:

New Vesuvio is a mixed media mosaic series that combines glimmering glass with natural white marble. Elegant yet durable, the natural stone creates a beauty only achieved after millions of years of nature working her magic. The glass is evocative of semi-precious stone found in volcanic formations. In concert, the simple geometric patterns become the timeless foundation for many interior styles.

Lunada Bay Tile is expanding its popular ocean-inspired Shinju ceramic collections, with a new shape in Shinju – the Stingray pattern – and Cape Pearl, a new color. Shinju, which means “pearl” in Japanese, translates the shimmer of pearls, the ridges of oyster shells, the surrounding reefs, and the movement of the ocean into a handcrafted ceramic tile series. Just as time and place affects an oyster's appearance, and the pearls they create, the texture and color of Shinju reflects the light and style of its surroundings. The series works beautifully on its own or in combination with any of our other ceramic, glass, and concrete tile collections.

The Graphite ceramic tile series is being refreshed with three new colors – Klein Blue, Carmine Red, and Molten Bronze, all well known, time honored paint colors – and one new pattern, Duet. The collection is inspired by pencil drawings, one of the oldest forms of self-expression, as well as raw ingredients for artistic expression.

Potter and designer Jonathan Adler’s® debut tile series with Lunada Bay Tile is Shelter Island. Inspired by the tones of the land, sea, and air surrounding Jonathan’s iconic home, these quiet, semi-matte hues are harmonious with both minimalist and maximalist spaces. Finished with semi-transparent glazes that accentuate the handcrafted textures and dimension beneath, adding subtle depth to your abode.
Tommy Bahama® by Lunada Bay Tile channels the beauty and abandon of vacation and exploration through a premier collection of handcrafted tiles.

Tommy Bahama® Glass Blends is an exquisite collection of glass mosaic blends inspired by the most exotic and untouched destinations of the world. The tiles can be used for Interior walls and backsplashes, shower walls and floors, fireplaces, light residential floors, pools, spas and water features, exterior walls.

Tommy Bahama® Kapa: Reinterpreting Tommy Bahama's most iconic textile prints, Kapa architectural concrete tiles are inspired by elements of the exotic: sumptuous tropical fabrics, lush palm fronds, and waves lapping along a quiet shoreline. The embossed relief surfaces spark vacation daydreams and sanguine memories. Handcrafted in California, the dimensional surfaces add subtle, luxe texture to walls and coordinate with Tommy Bahama and Lunada Bay Tile glass collections.

“Tile is like jewelry for your home. An expanded range of colors, textures, and patterns plus the ability to complement any décor, have made tile appropriate for areas anywhere in the home, both inside and outside. Interesting formats, colors and materials allow for true customization,” said Feras Irikat, Director of Design and Marketing, Lunada Bay Tile.

  • Harbor City, CA, April 18 – Lunada Bay Tile is celebrating its 20th anniversary, building upon a reputation for design, innovation, and artistry.

Lunada Bay Tile was started in a residential home garage by Carl Steadly, President and CEO. The name Carl chose for his company honors the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula of Southern California. The company’s design philosophy skillfully blends traditional artisanship with modern influences while exploring the boundaries of material possibilities. From forward-looking tile collections to collaborations with design powerhouses such as designer and potter Jonathan Adler™ and lifestyle icon Tommy Bahama™, Lunada Bay Tile has created an array of shapes, patterns, colors, and materials that inspire boundless creation.

“Lunada Bay Tile began by offering carefully curated slate and beautifully handcrafted pewter tile collections and over the years our product lines have extended into glass and ceramic,” says Feras Irikat, Director of Design and Marketing. “Throughout our 20 years, we have remained focused on bringing original products made with passion and daring design to interior and outdoor spaces.”

Since 2003, Lunada Bay Tile has produced handcrafted glass tile collections through old and new techniques of glassmaking that elevate design possibilities and create statements using color, shape, texture, and luminosity.

“Glass is a versatile medium, and we have been committed to showing how glass is an excellent choice for artistic expression,” Irikat said. “Carl himself learned his glass making skills at Bisazza Mosaic in the early 1990s, and we continue to take our inspiration from painting, sculpture, textiles, and nature.”

The Art of Lunada Bay Tile

Many of Lunada Bay Tile’s exquisite collections, such as Shinju, Ka-nū, Origami, Agate, and Namibia are inspired by the creativity of Japanese artisans. Steadly’s early and current collections draw on multiple Asian inspirations—including architecture, sculpture, calligraphy, and paper-making—to create stunning effects.

Carl Steadly’s initial immersion into Japanese culture and design started when he was a graduate student at Sophia University in Tokyo in 1982, after having taken early graduation from the University of Connecticut. His sponsors (through the offices of Mori Hanae, a famous Japanese textile and design company) submerged him in Japanese culture; every month he would travel to Kyoto to spend time with his hosts. During the day, he would be taken to see and participate in tea ceremony classes, kimono fitting sessions and to speak with pottery artisans. They would visit/study Japanese temples and gardens and discuss their essence. At night, he would be tutored in Japanese business styles and practices.

It was this background that inspired one of Steadly’s earliest creations: “Sumi-e was our first big product, our first big hit,” says Steadly. “Essentially, the glass looks like brush strokes, reflective of Japanese calligraphy. The translucent glass provides the perfect canvas for our artists to juxtapose color, contrast, transparency, and movement.”

    Tile as Art/Art as Tile

“I spend a lot of time talking with mosaic artists, sculptural artists, etc.,” said Steadly. “The house I live in used to be owned by a famous bronze sculptor (Mr. Aris Demetrios) and we bought it specifically because it was contemporary (unusual for Santa Barbara which tends to prefer Spanish Mission style homes) and because the windows stretch to the entire walls and ceilings—our eventual goal is to showcase sculptural art. This passion has spilled into my professional life as well.”

Carl finds inspiration everywhere, especially when wandering through art galleries specializing in glass, metal sculpture, or landscape art. One such find is Birdscape (found in Auckland, New Zealand, in a national museum). To Carl, the essence of these handmade glass birds is that Lunada Bay Tile glass is much more difficult to make on a daily basis than standard glass tiles and should be portrayed as reproducible commercial art. The individually made avian sculptures also capture Lunada Bay Tile’s unique perspective on tile design to draw on various glassmaking techniques to create these one-of-a-kind art pieces.

Another very recent example is Momentum. In a bold nod to Lunada Bay Tile’s eclectic and forward-focused design capabilities, the Momentum collection of sculptural tiles feature hand-crafted ceramics that can be used to create three-dimensional art for walls. The tiles actually create visual movement: use as a single shape to discover various textures, or puzzle together multiple shapes to express unique direction.

“No one else makes anything like this,” says Steadly. “These expressive creations help make it possible for tile to become part of a larger conversation about personal expression.”

    The Dream Team

“We are celebrating not only our business, but also honoring our staff, clients and suppliers who have contributed to our longevity and continued success,” says Steadly. Since day one, the company’s guiding principle has been its unparalleled commitment to customers, employees, and suppliers.

From the start, Lunada Bay Tile has fostered a collaborative environment and Steadly refers to his colleagues as the “Dream Team.”

“We’ve painstakingly assembled the dream team. I do not believe in genetic pedigree, but I do believe in career pedigree. We could sum it up by saying there is really a true human factor that is involved in the company. Basically, everybody was involved at some point or another in a very extensive tile career,” Steadly says. “It is a hiring prerequisite that our key staff members must love tile.”

Many people have been with Lunada Bay Tile 10 or more years – and even longer in the industry – including (we need to update the number of years) Design & Marketing Director Feras Irikat (10 years); Chris Brown, North American Sales Director (12 years); Mathew Pike, Director of National Accounts & International Sales (10 years), Ken Milbery, Head of Technical Department (7 years); and Mark Simon, Chief Operating Officer (12 years), who has largely spearheaded the growth and given LBT its organizational rigor.

Mari Hatsukade, Customer Service, and June Ikeda, Accounting –started with Steadly in his early days and are still with him today. Yocelyn Asencio, Inventory Control Manager and artisan liaison (20 years), along with Neil Katz, Director of Business Development (17 years), offer a combination of experience, skill, customer-focus, and industry knowledge that is unsurpassed.

"We aim to meet each client's unique needs by offering a wide array of collections and opportunities for customization,” says Jim Stevens, Brand Manager. “Lunada Bay Tile supports a collaborative work environment where people engage in daily and lively discussions as to the exact look, feel and visual experience that exemplifies the LBT design philosophy.”

“After 20 years, Lunada Bay Tile shows no signs of slowing down,” says Stevens. “We see ourselves as the eye candy of the industry. We want people to talk about our special and innovative designs that are the essence of Lunada Bay Tile creations, and we are excited about our future.”
